A few weeks ago I had the great privilege of meeting many of you as I hosted my very first Women of Standard Network “connecting” event. During this session I shared a step by step process on How to Build Your Business While Working a 9 to 5!
I’m sure you may be thinking, “Me? Build my business while working 9 – 12 hour days? I don’t think so!” Perhaps you are thinking about your already jammed pack schedule but I am here to let you know these three simple words: It Is Possible!!!
The truth is you have the capability to do anything you set your mind to but the question is: HOW BAD DO YOU REALLY WANT IT? How bad do you want to be successful? How bad do you want to be your own boss? How bad do you want to come off your job and create your own schedule?
Friend, I am here to tell you that if you have a genuine desire to be success and are willing to make the necessary sacrifices which need to be made, YOU CAN DO IT!
Here are the first three steps to building your business while working a 9 to 5:
Step One: Identify Your “WHY?”: Always remember WHY you do what you do is more important than what you actually do. Always check your motive. Everything we do should be done unto the Lord and not unto man nor for our own personal desires. When considering building or creating a ministry or business ask yourself the following questions:
-Why do I desire to start this ministry or business?
– What problem am I solving?
– Who is my market? (target audience)
Knowing your WHY is what will keep you going when adversity comes (because it will come). But remember your ULTIMATE why: It must be your divine calling that you are answering. Giving the Lord a surrendered YES to do what He is calling you to do and HOW He is instructing you to do it. You don’t have to know all of the answers but only have ACCESS to them.
Step Two: Write the Vision: Habakkuk 2:2 tells us to write the vision and make it plain. Verse 3 goes on to say, though it tarry wait for it. Your vision will not manifest overnight. It will take you spending time in prayer, fasting and seeking the face of God to receive full instruction on what He would like you to do and how He wants you to do it. In writing your vision you must know that the unique part of your brand is YOU. You do not have to try to be like anyone else nor be intimidated by anyone else who’s vision is similar to yours because their brand is different from your because your brand has you in it! Remember: A goal without a strategic plan of action is simply a wish! Be strategic, spend time in prayer, allow God to give you the vision and prepare yourself to execute it!!!!
Step Three: Focus On ONE Thing At a Time: In building your business while working a 9 to 5 you must focus on accomplishing ONE goal at a time. Remember: If you chase two rabbits you will catch neither. This brings me to a question: What or who has your focus? Are you overly consumed with helping others to the point that you are unable to focus on what God has instructed you to do? I believe it was Dee Dee (a participant from Saturday’s session) who said, “I am great at promoting others but I struggle when it comes to myself.” This is a natural feeling. Often times we can think of creative ideas for others and have the momentum to help them write and executive their vision but what about yours. It is time to FOCUS! Now, I am not saying don’t help others. But what I am saying is there comes a time when you have to add yourself to your calendar and know that delayed obedience is still disobedient.
Also, don’t try to do multiple things at a time. I spent two years strategically building the Women of Standard brand before I branched off and began to do other things. It wasn’t until I focused on building my brand that later the events came, books, products and more. There are great benefits to being focused. I challenge you to not allow yourself to work on one thing today, another thing tomorrow and another thing next week. You must remain focused until you SEE what God SAID manifested! You can do this!!!
