10 Rules for Writing Like a BOSS

BOSSDo you desire to write a book but have no idea where to begin?

Or perhaps you are in the process of writing a book and find yourself stuck and not sure how to move the story along.

If you answered yes, to either of these questions your prayers have been answered and HELP has arrived!

Being an author of eight books I have learned some things along the way that I believe will be extremely beneficial to you.

Below are 10 Rules for Writing Like a BOSS!

writing

  1. Be Authentic – The #1 way to connect with your audience is to be YOU! People can spot a fake/phony from a mile away. Remain true to who you are by allowing your personality to be expressed through your writings which in turn will make your reader feel as if they are actually getting to know you.
  2. Be Strategic- Before you begin any project you should not only know WHAT you desire to do but HOW you desire to do it as well. In making it happen you must have a strategy to make your book a success. In doing so this may or may not include (a.) Hiring a coach or (b.) Working with a publishing company. I have seen countless numbers of people trying to do it on their own only to have a really cool story loss between the pages of a book that no one is buying.
  3. Be Specific- Before you begin writing it is essential that you know WHO you are writing to. Many tend to just write the intention of everyone reading their book. Truth is more books are sold when they are geared toward a particular group of people/audience. Also, always write as if you are speaking to one individuals although thousands within your target audience may actually read your book.
  4. Be Organized– One thing that plagues many aspiring authors is the lack of organization. All many of them is that they want to write a book, not really sure on what topic or what the overall purpose of the book is. Within my training course, Write the Book Already I share a step by step guide on how to write a best selling book in 7 days! It is the exact blueprint I have used with each one of my books. It helps me organize my thoughts and prevents me from being all over the place in my writings. You can learn more about this course by clicking here: http://carlacannon.com/write-book-already-writers-coaching-program/.
  5. Be Fully Present- I encourage all writers to schedule a time to write in an atmosphere that is conducive to bringing out their creativity. This environment should be free of noise, food and clutter. While in this space you want to ensure you are fully present mentally and physically. Also, I encourage you not to spend no more than (3) hours at a time writing because honestly after staring at a computer screen that long it is wise to give your eyes a break.
  6. Be Focused- Enter into your writing space with your blueprint (I share this within my training course; click above to learn more and own yours today), and know ahead of time how long you will be writing. Set your timer, remove your cell phone, house phone and turn off all notifications on your phone to minimize distractions. If your spouse and kids can’t seem to keep the noise down, try rising up early before everyone else does, or stay up late writing once they are all asleep. If all else fails take time and go to your local library to write and be sure to take your thumb drive with you and oh yeah, leave your cell phone in the car and set the timer on your watch to inform you when your time of writing is up.
  7. Beware- Be aware of the needs of your audience. When someone picks up a book, their #1 thought is, “What is this book going to do for me?”
This is why I believe the top areas individuals look at when determining whether or not to purchase a book are: (1) Title & Subtitle (2) Colors (3) Table of Content and (4) Content on the back of the book. If they are not intrigued by all 4 of the above more than likely your book will be put back on the shelf. This is why you muse beware of your audience as well as intentional about getting your message out to the masses.
  8. Be Resilient– The moment you make a decision to write your book, expect everything that can go wrong to go wrong. This is simply a distraction. Anytime you are giving birth to purpose you must endure labor pains. You see, your manuscript is more than just words on paper; it is your baby and it will cost you to deliver it if you expect your message to impact the lives of others. I like to say it like this: If you expect a small number of people to be impacted by your work then expect small amounts of opposition. But if you desire the world to be impacted by your work expect tremendous experience. Greater the impact; greater the labor pains. The question is will you abort or go through with the delivery.
  9. Be Ready– Through Inspiring Hearts Coaching Institute I have taught, equipped and activated dozens of individuals into not only discovering their life purpose but also learning how to profit from it in the process. Within my institute I also teach, when you write a book you launch your business. Therefore, be ready to speak publicly regarding your work. If your work touches the lives of others trust me someone is going to want to book you as a speaker to have you come and share your story and key principles in front of a live audience. Writing is one thing; but speaking is a another skill that can be developed and nurtured this is why you must understand that when you write a book you launch your business!
  10. Be Honest– If you are going to share your story you must commit to being completely honest! I built my entire business off of sharing my life experiences; some funny while others were extremely painful. However, both enabled my audiences to connect with me and desire to work with me or invite me to speak on their platforms. This rule is congruent with Rule #1: Be Authentic.

If you found the above tips to be helpful I’d love to hear from you, simply comment below and share with me what point resonated with you the most!

Also, this Friday, my new book: TURBULENCE: A Practical Guide on How to Remain Resilient in the Midst of Every Storm will be available at Amazon.com!

5 Things You Need to Live the Life of Your Dreams

happy woman

Do you currently find yourself living a life that you know is completely beneath your current capabilities?

Do you find yourself addicted to mediocrity rather than extraordinary living?

Are you ready to think and grow bigger?

As a Kingdom Entrepreneur for the past six years I didn’t always play big or think big. I used to self-sabotage a lot, make excuses or even shy away from large platforms. But the more my confidence grew the more I evolved and became comfortable in my own skin.

Many desire to be successful which requires one to take the stairs and not the elevator. You can not copy people’s content because you notice they gain a lot of traction and think it will work for you. I have witnessed this so much in the industry of coaching, publishing and speaking.

(Speaking at my annual Women of Standard Experience in North Carolina)

You have a unique voice and gift to share with the world and in order to be effective you must

a.) Establish your own voice
b.) Deny the copy-cat syndrome
c.) Be willing to DO THE WORK!

Your brand/business will excel the moment you make a cognizant decision to BE YOU! Many fall into the trap of becoming who others desire them to be but that will cause you to become a fraud and hypocrite.

Here are a few keys to finding your own voice:

a.) Identify things and topics that you are passionate about
b.) Develop an audience who share these interests with you
c.) Identify a problem your target audience is having.
d.) Solve the problem through a product or service you provide
e.) Incorporate your personal story in your brand

Now that we have that out of the way there are 5 things I want to share that will help you live the life of your dreams:

1. Good Health- Taking care of yourself is a must. Many fail to add themselves to their calendar and have a tendency to put others before themselves. I know we are taught to do this. But if your body breaks down due to improper diet, lack of rest, or unresolved issues that lead to spiritual, physical, mental and even emotional depletion then what good are you to others?

2. Dedication– Marry the vision- no more one night stands with your vision and goals, but you must be committed to see what you desire to fruition and perhaps tweak your message, delivery or method while remaining true to who you are at the CORE.

3. Focus- Follow one course until successful. In my book, The Entrepreneur Blueprint I share this formula: Divided focus= NO focus. Let that set in.

4. Strategy- Ideas + Strategy = SUCCESS You can have a great idea but if you lack strategy and proper timing your effort will not be successful. Many do not lack talent, potential or drive but what is lacking is strategy. This is what separates US from THEM. US being Kingdom Entrepreneurs and THEM being worldy entrepreneurs who are only in their line of work for personal gain. Sadly WEs are winning because we carry the bread and butter (anointing + gifting) lack the key thing that is needed to be successful in any industry you may be in.

5. Resilience- Never Ever Give Up! In order to live the life of your dreams you must be willing to never quit. Now, I am not saying become a “hustler” and join the “no sleep/hustle hard” team. But I am saying is you must tap into your inner strength knowing that you have what it takes to be successful and keep pressing until you see manifested in the earth what God showed you in the spirit.

Remember skill alone is never enough!

DO YOU DESIRE COACHING? Coaching is a great way to transition from clutter to clarity as well as gain wisdom needed to get you to the next dimension in relation to accomplishing your dreams and goals.

By speaking with a trained professional who has already accomplished what you desire to do is a great way to get you moving at a fast pace.

5 Principles Entrepreneurs Must Activate in Their Business

ignite

As a Kingdom Entrepreneur it’s essential to incorporate key principles and core values into your business.

On page 137 in my best selling book, The Entrepreneur Blueprint I define a Kingdom Entrepreneur as the following: “One who has fully committed and submitted both their natural and supernatural gifts to the advancement of the Kingdom of God.”

One thing I want to ensure is clear is that our gifts are not limited to the four walls of the church. However, all that God has placed on the inside of us is to bring his glory, presence and love into every person we encounter.

This week  I conduct a live training on Periscope entitled: IGNITE SUCCESS TRAINING where I shared (20) Principles to IGNITE Trailblazing Success in your business. Today I will only share (4); you can feel free to connect with me on Periscope @CarlaRCannon to watch both Part I & II of the training for deeper details and discussion.

I began by sharing the definition of the word: IGNITE which means to set something on fire; or to give life or energy to something or someone. When you are set on fire; or have life poured into you it’s impossible to remain the same, or become comfortable in your current state.

As an advocate for Sisterhood and Kingdom Entrepreneurship it is my mission to blaze a trail to help others keep their brothers and sisters “lit” in an effort to up-build the Kingdom of God. black woman1. Give your story time to develop: As a new entrepreneur it’s essential that you pace yourself. Too often we are in a hurry to make a dollar without first establishing a core message with our audience (which is our story)

POINT 1: Your story is the number one connector to your audience. Before people can buy from you they must first be able to relate to you.

2. Spend time developing YOU: Too often we try to build a business without first building ourselves. You are no good to your customers/clients if you are broken, distracted and live a private life full of chaos. Whatever you have going on in your personal life if left unattended will bleed over into your business.

POINT 2: Before one can lead, they must first learn how to be led.

3. Invest in a mentor/coach early on: Why wait until you find yourself stuck, in a rut or burned out to reach out for help? Think prevention rather than intervention. In life we all need help, however, no one person has everything you need. This is why it is important to focus on one key area in your life at a time rather than having a coach for this and a coach for that all at once; at least when you are first starting out. Too many voices can do more harm than good. At the same time always be open to wisdom and sound advice that can help you both personally and professionally.

POINT 3: Always remain teachable.

4. Perfect your craft before you put a price on it: Too many are using the lives of others to practice their business which is a big no no. Too many are packaging mess and putting a price on it. Ensure that what you are offering has substance that can literally transform the life of your clients.

POINT 4: Your Purpose is NOT your hustle.

5. Never despise small beginnings- start where you are with what you have. – Who said you need money? You have a gift. What I’ve learned is that many people I come across feel they have a money problem when the truth is they have an idea problem. Tapping into your gift un-apologetically can lead to great wealth if you will commit to a lifetime of learning and becoming content (not complacent) where you are and with what you have. Use what is in your hands and be willing to sacrifice now so that you can enjoy life to the fullest later.

POINT 5: You have everything you need to begin right now. Lean in.

Mistakes Small Business Owners Make on Social Media & How to Correct Them

6 Mistakes Small Business Owners Make Via Social Media & How to Correct Them

Being in business for the past six years I’ve seen and learned a lot. One thing I have noticed is that finding clients is a lot easier now than it was even three years ago.
We have various social media platforms that if used properly can get our message out to the masses.

The problem I see many emerging and established entrepreneurs make is (1) not being on social media at all and (2) not using social media effectively and appropriately. Today I want to share how you can use social media to take your business to the next dimension and expand your brand in the process.

Here are  6 Mistakes Small Business Owners Make Via Social Media & How to Correct Them:

1. Having an unclear brand: Take time to fill out the “About Me” portion on FB as well as the introductory characters on IG & TWITTER. This gives a clear picture of who you are & what you do at a glance. Be sure to post content that compliments or properly displays your brand.

2. Not identifying your USP (Unique Serving Proposition): As business owners our ultimate purpose for being on social media should be to accumulate more clients & connect with other bosses. We don’t care what you are eating or who your new boo is (unless its complimentary to your brand.) If it doesn’t increase your bottom line (lead you to being profitable) DON’T POST IT!

3. Being too salesy – I see people simply posting saying, “SIGN UP TODAY” or “BUY MY BOOK” instead of developing content that leads to a landing page, or sharing the results your program, product or event will produce.

4. Having way too much going on- A confused mind will NEVER buy. Focus on building ONE brand at a time & become known for that SPECIFIC area of expertise. Rid yourself of the temptation to be a back of all trades. Identify the ONE thing you do exceptionally well & capitalize on it!

5. Sharing too many personal posts- As public figures it’s natural to share family photos; etc. however, if you have a tendency to post out of your emotions this could discourage others from taking you & your business seriously. Post only things that compliment your business/brand OR create a personal page (or blog) to do to do so.

How to Get Your Bounce Back!

10496925_810770948955772_5580784109317414382_o

As we all know life can often deal us a hand in which we were not prepared to have to play. We experience various different emotions from happiness to sadness, joy to grief, encouragement to discouragement and much more. In spite of it all the key to making the best out of life is to refuse to take things personal and know that if it is currently raining in your life the sun will eventually shine again. What you are experiencing currently is simply there to help get you a step closer to where you were destined to be. The betrayal was a part of the making of you. The disappointment was allowed to develop an inner encouragement so you can become self- motivated rather than waiting on someone else to cheer for you, you now learn how to cheer for yourself! footerpromo_panel2_0_footer-1348188273 The financial loss was only there to show you what to do as well as what not to do the next time around! In life you must know that things are going to happen but what’s more important is how you choose to respond to them that make the difference. Many of today’s greatest innovators from Bill Gates to Oprah Winfrey each experienced their own personal trials and setbacks. But guess what the difference is between successful and unsuccessful people? 1907328_885803821450766_3467361399717286068_n-619x375 Unsuccessful people complain and make excuses while successful people take ownership of whatever takes place in their lives and they take on the attitude of Dwayne “The ROCK” Johnson who is famously quoted for, ‘When life throws you lemons…..CRUSH’EM!” I know we are so used to hearing, “When life throws lemons, make lemonade,” and that’s cute but it’s time to get aggressive about your future and snatch back your power and refuse to be unhappy another day of your life!

Below are a few steps on how you can get your bounce back:

  • Face life with an optimistic point of view daily
  • Never compare your process to others
  • Own your problems and develop ways to overcome and make them work for you
  • Find mentors who have overcame in areas in which you too desire
  • Listen to motivational speakers daily such as Joyce Meyer, Eric Thomas and Les Brown
  • Monitor your thoughts: Whatever you think you will do, whatever you say will become your reality
  • Be resilient in the midst of it all by refusing to give up
  • Celebrate yourself even if at times you have to do it alone
  • Develop a network of friends who support you and help build/strengthen you in your weak areas
  • Be authentic at all times and especially true to yourself
  • Love yourself as you are becoming and yet transforming into who you were created to be
  • Rejoice in every season of life
  • No matter what happens, learn from it all

Now that you have been equipped on how to get your bounce back I want you to go and execute each of them beginning now! Tweet me the step (tip) above that stood out the most to you and I will be your accountability partner to help you stay on the right track!!!   1617698_875878369122457_6893770582011439409_o If you desire a coach or mentor I would love to serve you for I am preparing to launch Trailblazers Coaching Academy on March 9, 2015 which is for the advancement of women in ministry/business to help improve, strengthen and help them develop stronger confidence levels to know all things are truly possible if we would simply use what’s in our hands to create the life we desire and deserve and share our stories from a place of power rather than pain and pity! Build Your Business NOW, While Working a 9 to 5!

10609502_651523648285379_5081307151070483641_n

A few weeks ago I had the great privilege of meeting many of you as I hosted my very first Women of Standard Network “connecting” event. During this session I shared a step by step process on How to Build Your Business While Working a 9 to 5!

I’m sure you  may be thinking, “Me? Build my business while working 9 – 12 hour days? I don’t think so!” Perhaps you are thinking about your already jammed pack schedule but I am here to let you know these three simple words: It Is Possible!!!

The truth is you have the capability to do anything you set your mind to but the question is: HOW BAD DO YOU REALLY WANT IT? How bad do you want to be successful? How bad do you want to be your own boss? How bad do you want to come off your job and create your own schedule?

Friend, I am here to tell you that if you have a genuine desire to be success and are willing to make the necessary sacrifices which need to be made, YOU CAN DO IT!

Here are the first three steps to building your business while working a 9 to 5:

download

Step One: Identify Your “WHY?”: Always remember WHY you do what you do is more important than what you actually do. Always check your motive. Everything we do should be done unto the Lord and not unto man nor for our own personal desires. When considering building or creating a ministry or business ask yourself the following questions:

-Why do I desire to start this ministry or business?
– What problem am I solving?
– Who is my market? (target audience)

Knowing your WHY is what will keep you going when adversity comes (because it will come). But remember your ULTIMATE why: It must be your divine calling that you are answering. Giving the Lord a surrendered YES to do what He is calling you to do and HOW He is instructing you to do it. You don’t have to know all of the answers but only have ACCESS to them.

Step Two: Write the Vision: Habakkuk 2:2 tells us to write the vision and make it plain. Verse 3 goes on to say, though it tarry wait for it. Your vision will not manifest overnight. It will take you spending time in prayer, fasting and seeking the face of God to receive full instruction on what He would like you to do and how He wants you to do it. In writing your vision you  must know that the unique part of your brand is YOU. You do not have to try to be like anyone else nor be intimidated by anyone else who’s vision is similar to yours because their brand is different from your because your brand has you in it! Remember: A goal without a strategic plan of action is simply a wish! Be strategic, spend time in prayer, allow God to give you the vision and prepare yourself to execute it!!!!

Step Three: Focus On ONE Thing At a Time: In building your business while working a 9 to 5 you must focus on accomplishing ONE goal at a time. Remember: If you chase two rabbits you will catch neither. This brings me to a question: What or who has your focus? Are you overly consumed with helping others to the point that you are unable to focus on what God has instructed you to do? I believe it was Dee Dee (a participant from Saturday’s session) who said, “I am great at promoting others but I struggle when it comes to myself.” This is a natural feeling. Often times we can think of creative ideas for others and have the momentum to help them write and executive their vision but what about yours. It is time to FOCUS! Now, I am not saying don’t help others. But what I am saying is there comes a time when you have to add yourself to your calendar and know that delayed obedience is still disobedient.

Also, don’t try to do multiple things at a time. I spent two years strategically building the Women of Standard brand before I branched off and began to do other things. It wasn’t until I focused on building my brand that later the events came, books, products and more. There are great benefits to being focused. I challenge you to not allow yourself to work on one thing today, another thing tomorrow and another thing next week. You must remain focused until you SEE what God SAID manifested! You can do this!!!

This concludes the top 3 steps on How to Build Your Business While Working a 9 to 5! Check out a sneak peek of the video from our LIVE session.
