What I Love the Most About Entrepreneurship

carla r cannon ii

One of the things I absolutely love the most about entrepreneurship is the freedom to implement creativity, determine how much money I want to make and set my own schedule!

Doesn’t that sound amazing? This year will make 7 years since I started my own business and I tell you, I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world!

Now let’s break down the top 3 things I love the most about entrepreneurship:

(1) Implementing Creativity- As a Kingdom Entrepreneur you are able to be as creative as you want and there really are no boundaries. You determine what type of services you desire to provide to your clients and the fun thing about it is you can do it in your own way!

Office

The ways I implemented creativity into my business was through writing books, hosting live events, providing coaching & consulting services, speaking at other people’s events & starting my own publishing company.

I can recall in 2013 when my first shipment of books arrived at my door step! I almost fainted! It’s like I believed it could happen for me but then again I didn’t believe it could happen for me!

Then two years later I took it a step further and began to help others package their brilliance by teaching book writing and now I am hosting my third tour entitled, WRITE LIKE A BOSS! How awesome is that!

office 5Sure success leaves clues however, entrepreneurship enables you to insert your personality into your business. At the end of the day we all aren’t teaching anything different or new. What many are investing in is our process, and our relational skills. I know it may sound weird. But there is a reason why my clients choose to work with me rather than someone else and there is a reason why someone chooses to patronize your business rather than your competitor. The #1 key in business is building relationships.

Many tend to focus on selling to prospects rather than learning what is hurting their prospects. Once someone knows that you actually care about what keeps them up at night no amount of money will keep them from working with you!

(2) Setting My Own Pay: The thing that trips me out the most is (3) years ago I was afraid to walk away from my corporate job because I couldn’t wrap my head around how in the heck someone would actually pay me for helping them become better! DSC_0210

(Hosting my very own Women’s Empowerment event entitled, Girl You ROCK! in 2015)

Once I built up enough courage to actually quit and do my own thing full time it was then that I learned that there are tons of people who desire to learn how to do the things that come naturally to me!

So in setting my own pay here’s what I did:

I sat down and got rid of every expense that I did not need. I cancelled magazine subscriptions, Pandora and more.

Next, I totaled all of my bills and said ok I need “X” amount of revenue coming in each month; this is what I called my SURVIVAL budget.

I then took a walk into the future and asked myself: After you generate the necessary funds needed to reach your SURVIVAL budget what would your THRIVING budget be?

Workbook Cover

A THRIVING budget is the amount of money you need to be comfortable in life on a day to day basis. This number is what keeps you motivated and on your grind as a Kingdom Entrepreneur.

Finally, I took my survival budget and began to create products that could help me generate the income needed and the first place I started was coaching. I started out charging $75/hour for one on one coaching sessions. I absolutely loved it but eventually working all day on my 9 to 5 and then spending (4) hours in the evening coaching four different clients for the duration of an hour each became old pretty quickly and I was burned out.

It wasn’t until later that I learned I could charge more and serve less clients; quality clients and continue to enjoy what I do and prevent having a mental or physical breakdown in the process.

I often hear entrepreneurs desiring to help everyone and anyone. This mindset will lead you in a downward spiral fast! Be specific on who you want to serve; seek out your tribe; locate your remnant and then create a value ladder on how you plan to “stair step” them into your business!

Identifying your “why” is a great way to maintain momentum as you journey through the different transitions every entrepreneur has experienced at one time or another!

Your “WHY” will keep you going when the going gets tough!)

(3) Creating My Own Schedule: Having the flexibility to do what I want to do when I want is the best feeling EVER! I knew towards the end of 2017 that I no longer wanted to work full days. Therefore, I prayed, strategized and then met with my Administrator and informed her that effective immediately I would only meet with clients Tues-Thurs between 9AM-1PM.

Mondays are my vision planning days and Fridays are my evaluation and preparation days. I use Mondays and Fridays to focus on my personal brand as a speaker, author and trainer.

Did I fear that I would lose clients because I was no longer available between 9am-5pm? Absolutely not! Want to know why? Say, “tell me girl tell me” (laughs)

Because I learned a secret… want to know? Lean in.. come a little closer…

YOUR REMNANT WILL MAKE THE NECESSARY SACRIFICES NEEDED TO WORK WITH YOU!

I have clients that meet with me on their lunch break, they rearrange their schedules to meet with Coach C (what they call me)

So from 2012 I started out working a 9 to 5 and I coached clients on my lunch break and at night after I got off work while raising my daughter in a single parent home. I did this for hmmm about 4 years.

Once I went full time I increased my prices and said no more working after 5pm.

Now fast forward to 6 1/2 years later and I no longer see clients after 1pm and only on Tues-Thurs.

What’s my point? Whatever you desire in life you must pursue it and be willing to make the necessary sacrifices in order to make your dream a reality. Whatever you want is within your reach but the question is HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT?

10 Rules for Writing Like a BOSS

BOSSDo you desire to write a book but have no idea where to begin?

Or perhaps you are in the process of writing a book and find yourself stuck and not sure how to move the story along.

If you answered yes, to either of these questions your prayers have been answered and HELP has arrived!

Being an author of eight books I have learned some things along the way that I believe will be extremely beneficial to you.

Below are 10 Rules for Writing Like a BOSS!

writing

  1. Be Authentic – The #1 way to connect with your audience is to be YOU! People can spot a fake/phony from a mile away. Remain true to who you are by allowing your personality to be expressed through your writings which in turn will make your reader feel as if they are actually getting to know you.
  2. Be Strategic- Before you begin any project you should not only know WHAT you desire to do but HOW you desire to do it as well. In making it happen you must have a strategy to make your book a success. In doing so this may or may not include (a.) Hiring a coach or (b.) Working with a publishing company. I have seen countless numbers of people trying to do it on their own only to have a really cool story loss between the pages of a book that no one is buying.
  3. Be Specific- Before you begin writing it is essential that you know WHO you are writing to. Many tend to just write the intention of everyone reading their book. Truth is more books are sold when they are geared toward a particular group of people/audience. Also, always write as if you are speaking to one individuals although thousands within your target audience may actually read your book.
  4. Be Organized– One thing that plagues many aspiring authors is the lack of organization. All many of them is that they want to write a book, not really sure on what topic or what the overall purpose of the book is. Within my training course, Write the Book Already I share a step by step guide on how to write a best selling book in 7 days! It is the exact blueprint I have used with each one of my books. It helps me organize my thoughts and prevents me from being all over the place in my writings. You can learn more about this course by clicking here: http://carlacannon.com/write-book-already-writers-coaching-program/.
  5. Be Fully Present- I encourage all writers to schedule a time to write in an atmosphere that is conducive to bringing out their creativity. This environment should be free of noise, food and clutter. While in this space you want to ensure you are fully present mentally and physically. Also, I encourage you not to spend no more than (3) hours at a time writing because honestly after staring at a computer screen that long it is wise to give your eyes a break.
  6. Be Focused- Enter into your writing space with your blueprint (I share this within my training course; click above to learn more and own yours today), and know ahead of time how long you will be writing. Set your timer, remove your cell phone, house phone and turn off all notifications on your phone to minimize distractions. If your spouse and kids can’t seem to keep the noise down, try rising up early before everyone else does, or stay up late writing once they are all asleep. If all else fails take time and go to your local library to write and be sure to take your thumb drive with you and oh yeah, leave your cell phone in the car and set the timer on your watch to inform you when your time of writing is up.
  7. Beware- Be aware of the needs of your audience. When someone picks up a book, their #1 thought is, “What is this book going to do for me?”
This is why I believe the top areas individuals look at when determining whether or not to purchase a book are: (1) Title & Subtitle (2) Colors (3) Table of Content and (4) Content on the back of the book. If they are not intrigued by all 4 of the above more than likely your book will be put back on the shelf. This is why you muse beware of your audience as well as intentional about getting your message out to the masses.
  8. Be Resilient– The moment you make a decision to write your book, expect everything that can go wrong to go wrong. This is simply a distraction. Anytime you are giving birth to purpose you must endure labor pains. You see, your manuscript is more than just words on paper; it is your baby and it will cost you to deliver it if you expect your message to impact the lives of others. I like to say it like this: If you expect a small number of people to be impacted by your work then expect small amounts of opposition. But if you desire the world to be impacted by your work expect tremendous experience. Greater the impact; greater the labor pains. The question is will you abort or go through with the delivery.
  9. Be Ready– Through Inspiring Hearts Coaching Institute I have taught, equipped and activated dozens of individuals into not only discovering their life purpose but also learning how to profit from it in the process. Within my institute I also teach, when you write a book you launch your business. Therefore, be ready to speak publicly regarding your work. If your work touches the lives of others trust me someone is going to want to book you as a speaker to have you come and share your story and key principles in front of a live audience. Writing is one thing; but speaking is a another skill that can be developed and nurtured this is why you must understand that when you write a book you launch your business!
  10. Be Honest– If you are going to share your story you must commit to being completely honest! I built my entire business off of sharing my life experiences; some funny while others were extremely painful. However, both enabled my audiences to connect with me and desire to work with me or invite me to speak on their platforms. This rule is congruent with Rule #1: Be Authentic.

If you found the above tips to be helpful I’d love to hear from you, simply comment below and share with me what point resonated with you the most!

First Steps to Writing a Book

Are you interested in writing a book but have the first clue as to where to begin? I personally know how that feels because when I set out to write my first book two years ago entitled, The Power in Waiting I had no clue what I was doing. Actually, just like you may have done, I also sat down and just started typing until I ran out of words for that day then when done I would put it down and pick it back up the next day.

What I did not know was that just like anything else in my life I needed strategy. I knew I desired to write a book but in order to make this dream a reality I had to put my faith into action and execute! I like to say it like this:

A goal without a strategic plan of action is simply a wish!

Anything you desire to do in life you must first have a game plan! One of the key things I teach in my company, Inspiring Hearts Coaching Institute (where I teach aspiring authors step by step how to become published authors) is that before you can write the book you must first identify the following:

  1. What do you have to say? Before you can write a book you must first identify what you have to say and why should anyone care? I know that may sound cold but it’s quite the opposite. These are hard truths that you must answer BEFORE you set out to write a book. Always identify a solution you are providing to a specific problem. Now sure, you can provide several solutions to multiple problems but be careful not to be too vague that you are unable to identify your target market specifically.
  2. Know who you are talking to- Who is your target market? What are their demographics (statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it)? What are their psychographics (the study and classification of people according to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological criteria, especially in market research.)
  3. Identify the strategic plan of action you will implement in marketing this project- Too often I see authors who have a great story line or content, phenomenal graphic design for their book site and a website you just love visiting but yet they aren’t selling any books. Why is that? Because they waited until after the book was written to develop a marketing strategy. This is a big no no!! You do NOT wait until your book is complete before you are talking about it, hosting live readings about it, teleconferences; etc. That is just like a film director waiting until the movie comes out before they advertise it. No! The reason we run to the movie theater is because we have seen the same commercials over and over and each time our anticipation grows stronger and stronger. What is this called? Marketing strategies. Now the only way you don’t have to market a project prior to release is if your name is Beyonce’ and you have half the world who already knows and loves your stuff. I know that was pretty cool when she did this back in 2013 and her fans went crazy and she sold millions of records in a matter of hours when she released it without a warning.

The only way you don’t have to market a new project is if your name is BEYONCE’!
